This authentic, rare Dutch cannon shows in great detail the crest used by many orders of knights, the most popular being “The Order of the Garter” which has history between Great Britain and the Netherlands dating back to medieval times.
“Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense”
An Anglo-Norman French maxim used as the motto of the British chivalric, “Order of the Garter.” It is translated as “May he be shamed who thinks badly of it” or “shame be to him who thinks evil of it.”
“Johanes Burger Huys Me Fecit 1676”
Directly translated means “made by Johanes Burger in 1676.” Known history of Johanes Burger: Was a gun founder from Middleburg (Netherlands). Possibly master founder at the Middleburg foundry, which was closed down at his death and was not reestablished until 1754.
